Bill 126 - Zero Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) for Young Drivers and Escalating Sanctions for Novice Drivers

Ontario is changing the rules of the road to provide a greater incentive to new and young drivers to drive responsibly, obey the conditions of their licence class and the rules of the road, and to prevent first-time impaired driving offenders from becoming repeat offenders.

As of August 1,2010, the following rules apply to new and young drivers:

  • All drivers 21 and under must maintain a zero blood alcohol concentration level while driving; and
  • All novice drivers in the Graduated Licensing System (GLS) will face escalating sanctions for repeat violations of their GLS conditions or convictions for any Highway Traffic Act offences that carry 4 or more demerit points.
