Michael A. Brown
Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of
Transportation
Michael A. Brown is currently the Member of Provincial Parliament for Algoma-Manitoulin, and was most recently Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. He has also served as the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Natural Resources, chaired the Cabinet Committee on Education Policy, and been a member of the Legislative Committee on Justice Policy.
While representing the people of Algoma-Manitoulin at Queen's Park, Mike has held numerous key posts both in government and opposition. He was named Deputy Speaker of the Ontario Legislature in 1999. In opposition, he was the Liberal critic for Seniors Issues, Natural Resources, and Northern Development and Mines. In October of 2007 he was elected to the Ontario Legislative Assembly for a sixth consecutive term. First elected in 1987, he has been mandated by the people in 1990, 1995, 1999 and 2003.
Mike was born in Sarnia, Ontario and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Western Ontario. He subsequently earned a diploma from Humber College of Applied Arts and Technologies. Prior to entering provincial politics, Mike was the deputy mayor of Gore Bay and President of the Manitoulin Municipal Association. He managed a small business and worked as a funeral director on Manitoulin Island from 1974 to 1987, and was involved in the community. Mike lives in Kagawong, Manitoulin Island, with his wife, Lynn. They have four daughters.
