Beginner Driver Education (BDE) Curriculum Standards

Part A: Curriculum Design Standards (CDS)

Overview

Provides requirements for the design, and delivery of the curriculum such as the approach, structure, educational settings and instructional hours, as well as the measurement of student competencies.

Approach (CDS 1)

Purpose

To ensure that students are engaged in and feel ownership over their own learning of safe and responsible driving

Objectives

The curriculum will:

  1. Continually reinforce the following overarching themes: (CD 1.1)
    1. safety and risk
    2. benefits of social responsibility
    3. benefits of environmental responsibility
    4. self-awareness of personal values, attitudes, and motives
  2. Foster personal insight and appreciation for critical self-awareness and continual improvement when evaluating abilities, limitations, and strengths (CD 1.2)
  3. Adhere to a learner-centred approach by: (CD 1.3)
    1. encouraging the active participation of each student
    2. supporting and facilitating self-directed learning
    3. allowing for integration of personal experiences
    4. ensuring knowledge and skills are acquired at a pace appropriate to individual students
    5. giving students autonomy by providing them with the opportunity to reach their own conclusions and guiding them towards achieving the intended learning outcomes
    6. encouraging students to learn from their mistakes in a safe learning environment
    7. emphasizing the importance of lifelong learning
  4. Foster the understanding and practice of cooperative driving (CD 1.4)
  5. Continually reinforce how formal rules of the road, common safe practices of road-users, and informed decision-making contribute to safe and responsible driving (CD 1.5)
  6. Reflect the most recent and contemporary views of traffic safety, education and training, social change, and acknowledge emerging technologies (CD 1.6)
  7. Incorporate a variety of driving environments, road conditions, and situations (CD 1.7)
