How to Apply for a Driver's Licence Refund

Moving Out of Ontario?

If you have moved to another province, state or country, you can request a refund on the unused portion of your driver's licence.

The following proof is needed to apply for a refund:

  • A copy of your new driver's licence issued by the jurisdiction you are living in now, showing the date of issue; OR:
  • A confirmation letter from the other jurisdiction's licensing authorities, confirming you are now a licensed driver in that province, state or country and the date that you surrendered your Ontario licence.

In addition, you must return your Ontario driver's licence and a signed letter stating your mailing address, your Ontario driver's licence number or name and date of birth and requesting a refund. If moving to another Canadian jurisdiction, that jurisdiction will require the Ontario driver's licence to be handed in for exchange purposes.

If the licensing fee was paid at a DriveTest Centre prior to September 2, 2003, or anytime at a Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing Office, you may request a refund by mailing the requested items to:

Ontario Shared Services
Revenue Management
40 Elm Street, Suite 41A
Sudbury, ON P3C 1S8

If the licensing fee was paid at a DriveTest Centre on or after September 2, 2003, you may request a refund by mailing the requested items to:

Serco DES Inc.
5000 Yonge Street, Suite 1402
Toronto, ON M2N 7E9

No Longer Driving?

If you are still residing in Ontario, and will no longer be driving, you must first return your driver's licence to the ministry for cancellation. We also need a letter requesting the refund, confirming that you will no longer be driving.

The refund will be calculated from the date your driver's licence is returned to the ministry and cancelled.

If the licensing fee was paid at a DriveTest Centre prior to September 2, 2003, or anytime at a Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing Office, you may present your Ontario driver's licence and the letter requesting a refund at any Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing Office, or mail the requested items to:
