APP Motorcycle Frequently asked questions

1. Has the ministry changed the APP eligibility criteria to accommodate motorcyclists?

No.  This change does not extend any new rights to motorcyclists who are disabled.  Motorcyclists with an APP permit are already authorized to park in spaces designated for persons with disabilities. Rather, this change would replace the requirements to display the existing APP placard permit with an APP motorcycle plate sticker.

2. Can I apply for an APP motorcycle plate sticker if I do not have an APP placard permit?

No. In order to qualify for an APP motorcycle plate sticker you must first apply and receive an APP placard permit. Once you receive your permit placard you can then submit a written request to ServiceOntario requesting an APP motorcycle plate sticker. An APP motorcycle plate sticker is only issued if you;

  • Hold a permanent or subject-to-change APP placard permit;
  • Hold a valid motorcycle driver’s licence (M or M2); and,
  • Are the registered owner of a valid licence plate attached to a motorcycle or motor assisted bicycle.

3. I currently have an M1 licence can I still apply for an APP motorcycle plate sticker?

No. In order to qualify for an APP motorcycle plate sticker you must hold an M2 or M licence.

4. Can I apply for an APP motorcycle plate sticker if I am a passenger on the motorcycle?

No. An APP motorcycle plate sticker is only issued if you;

  • Hold a permanent or subject-to-change APP placard permit;
  • Hold a valid motorcycle driver’s licence (M or M2); and,
  • Are the registered owner of a valid licence plate attached to a motorcycle or motor assisted bicycle.

5. I have a temporary disability, but I hold an M2 or M licence and have the motorcycle registered in my name. Would I qualify for an APP motorcycle plate sticker?

No. The APP motorcycle plate sticker is not issued to individuals with a temporary disability. The APP motorcycle plate sticker is only issued to individuals who hold a permanent or subject-to-change APP placard permit.

6. Once I receive the APP motorcycle plate sticker, do I have to display my APP placard permit on my motorcycle?

Once your APP motorcycle plate sticker is applied to your licence plate, your APP placard permit is not required to be displayed on the motorcycle. However, you must carry your APP placard permit at all times when parking in accessible parking spaces. Failure to produce the APP placard permit upon request may result in penalty.

7. Does the APP motorcycle plate sticker have an expiry date?

The APP motorcycle plate sticker becomes invalid immediately if one or more of the following requirements are not met:

  • No longer have a permanent or subject-to-change APP;
  • No longer have a valid attached motorcycle plate registered in your name; and,
  • No longer have a valid motorcycle driver’s licence (Class M or M2).

Note: The APP motorcycle plate sticker will automatically be renewed once the applicant renews their APP placard permit.

8. Are motorcycles allowed to park in designated parking spaces using the APP placard permit?

Yes.  Since the APP placard permit travels with the individual, it can be used on vehicles or motorcycles.  However, the APP placard permit, when used on motorcycles, is vulnerable to theft and/or damage caused by adverse weather conditions.  As a result, the ministry introduced the APP motorcycle plate sticker to address privacy, theft and environmental concerns associated with the placement of the existing APP placard permit on motorcycles.
