Highway 401 Widening East of Highway 3 to West of Manning Road

The reconstruction and widening of Highway 401 from east of Highway 3 to west of Manning Road (Essex County Road 19) will improve road conditions and enhance safety for the nearly 20,000 drivers using this section of freeway on a daily basis.

The six kilometre long project involves reconstruction and widening of the roadway from four to six-lanes, construction of a new concrete barrier to separate opposing traffic, drainage improvements, new paved shoulders, bridge replacements, and bridge rehabilitations.

Under the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) initiatives planned for Windsor-Essex, four to six new cameras will be constructed on Highway 401 over a distance of approximately seven kilometres between the Highway 401/Highway 3 interchange and 10th Concession Road in Tecumseh.

As part of the design process, the Ministry will examine ways to start the construction of this project sooner subject to property acquisition.

Also included are interchange improvements at Provincial Road. This project is Phase 4 of a five-phase Ministry of Transportation widening program of Highway 401 from Windsor to Tilbury.
