The reconstruction and widening of Highway 401 from east of Highway 3 to west of Manning Road (Essex County Road 19) will improve road conditions and enhance safety for the nearly 20,000 drivers using this section of freeway on a daily basis.
The six kilometre long project involved reconstruction and widening of the roadway from four to six-lanes, construction of a new concrete barrier to separate opposing traffic, drainage improvements, new paved shoulders, bridge replacements, and bridge rehabilitations.
Under the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) initiatives planned for Windsor-Essex, four to six new cameras were constructed on Highway 401 over a distance of approximately seven kilometres between the Highway 401/Highway 3 interchange and 10th Concession Road in Tecumseh.
Also included are interchange improvements at Provincial Road. This project is Phase 4 of a five-phase Ministry of Transportation widening program of Highway 401 from Windsor to Tilbury.
