Windsor Border Improvements

Project No. 11b

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)

Highway 401/402 Traveller Information Variable Message Sign

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) can help deliver an integrated transportation network that supports the economic well-being and quality of life that Ontario families deserve.

Motorists and commercial vehicles frequently experience delays at border crossings in Windsor via Highway 401 and Sarnia via Highway 402.

An electronic variable message sign has been installed on westbound Highway 401 in advance of the Highway 401/Highway 402 split.

This sign provides motorists and commercial vehicles with current border crossing information, allowing them to make informed decisions regarding their trip to the border crossings into the United States.

The sign is controlled through the Ministry of Transportation's London Traffic Operations Centre. Messages to be displayed will be based on traffic information from cameras located on Highway 401 and Highway 402 at the approaches to the border crossing.

Current Project Status

  • The electronic variable message sign was installed in November 2006.
  • Cameras on Highway 402 have been installed as a component of the Highway 402 Queue End Warning System.
  • The extension of the existing cameras network on Highway 401 started in September 2007 under the Highway 401 widening project
