Traffic queuing at the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) can help deliver an integrated transportation network that supports the economic well-being and quality of life that Ontario families deserve.
Motorists and commercial vehicles in Windsor frequently experience delays in the area of the Canadian Plaza of the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel.
To improve the operation of the tunnel entrance and approaches, traffic management systems being examined include: CCTV cameras to provide real-time detection of congestion and incidents; an automated tunnel queue detection system to prevent queuing inside the tunnel; and a critical intersection control system on the surrounding road network to modify signal timing to alleviate congestion. Video from the CCTV camera subsystem will be shared between stakeholder agencies on both sides of the border to provide traffic information at each border crossing point.
