Windsor Border Improvements

Project No. 4a

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)

CCTV Video Vehicle Detection System

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) help deliver an integrated transportation network that supports the economic well-being and quality of life that Ontario families deserve.

This project involved the installation of two video vehicle detection system cameras at the end of Highway 401 at Highway 3 in Windsor.

These cameras assist in the detection of incidents which allows advanced warnings to be provided to drivers through variable message signs located on Highway 401 in the approach to Windsor.

The images from the cameras are sent to the Ministry of Transportation's London Communications Centre. Information from the real-time images is then used to determine necessary deployment of emergency response personnel as well as inform motorists of possible delays on the approach to Highway 3 and at the Howard Avenue intersection.

Part of the province's broader Intelligent Border Crossing project, this system is designed to provide quick response to incidents to ensure the safety and efficiency of road systems in the Windsor-Detroit Gateway.
