Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) help deliver an integrated transportation network that supports the economic well-being and quality of life that Ontario families deserve.
Seven cameras, four located on Huron Church Road and three located on E.C. Row Expressway, were installed to help manage congestion and truck queuing between Highway 401 and the Detroit River Crossings.
CCTV Cameras are used as part of the Video Vehicle Detection System to automatically analyze images, detecting potential traffic conditions that require remedy. Operators in the Ministry of Transportation's Windsor Control Centre use the real-time images in determining the need to change traffic signal coordination as well as alert emergency personnel (fire, ambulance, police) of issues in the road network. The operators can also create messages to be displayed on the City of Windsor web site or on variable message signs outside of the city limits.
As part of the province's broader Intelligent Border Crossing project, these ITS cameras improve traffic management, provide information to better manage travel to existing crossings, enhance safety and security, and reduce congestion by providing traveller information for alternate routes to the border.
