Project No. 9

Windsor-Detroit Tunnel Plaza Master Plan and Improvements

Photo of Windsor-Detroit Tunnel entrance

Since September 11, 2001, safety measures implemented at all border crossings have resulted in vehicles queuing on municipal streets around the Canadian plaza of the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel. Upgrades to the tunnel plaza will address current traffic problems occurring in the local, surrounding municipal road system and maximize the performance of the tunnel plaza allowing for more efficient flow of vehicles. The upgrades to the Canadian tunnel plaza could include: improved plaza configuration; additional queue storage; a dedicated NEXUS lane; and improved access road configuration.

Current Project Status

  • The first of three scheduled Public Information Centres on the proposed alternatives was held February 23, 2006. This is part of the Environmental Assessment (EA) process to allow the public to comment on possible alternatives for the improvement area. The second Public Information Centre was held July 26, 2006.

Next Steps

  • We are working with the City of Windsor to finalize the schedule for this project based on the remaining requirements for the EA study.
