Clyde Avenue Rapid Bridge Replacement Project

Facts

  • This will be the second time the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario will be utilizing Rapid Replacement Technology through the use of SPMTs (Self Propelled Modular Transporters) to remove existing bridges, then transport new bridges into place. This technology has been used successfully in Europe and the USA.
  • The new eastbound and westbound bridges have been constructed in a staging area on Clyde Avenue near the Queensway. The bridges will be replaced during a 17-hour full closure of the highway, starting at 6:00 pm on Saturday August 2, 2008.
  • Each bridge is 21 metres long and 3 lanes wide (21 metres). The weight of each bridge is approximately 650 tonnes.
    • Conventional rehabilitation of this type of bridge would take two to three years to complete with lane closures.
  • This contract is the second of three contracts to be completed on the Queensway. Contract three will include the rapid replacement of the bridges at Carling Avenue Westbound, Kirkwood Avenue and Carling Avenue Eastbound.
  • The Island Park Bridge was replaced in 15 hours last August. The same award winning team has been working on the rapid replacement of the Clyde Avenue Bridge.

Detour Route during Rapid Replacement

The Queensway will be closed between Carling Avenue and Maitland Avenue (eastbound) and Carling Avenue to Bronson (westbound) from 6:00 pm on Saturday August 2, 2008 to 11:00 am on August 3, 2008.

Detour Routes will be taken as follows:

  • Westbound Detour
    • Exit the Queensway at Carling Avenue
    • Follow Carling Avenue to Maitland Avenue
    • Turn left at Maitland Avenue and proceed South to 417 Westbound On-Ramp
  • Eastbound Detour
    • Exit the Queensway at Maitland Avenue
    • Follow Maitland Avenue Northbound to Carling Avenue
    • Turn right at Carling Avenue and proceed East to 417 Eastbound On-Ramp
