Island Park Rapid Bridge Replacement Project

Facts

  • This will be the first time the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario will be utilizing Rapid Replacement Technology through the use of SPMT’s (Self Propelled Modular Transporters) to remove the existing bridges, then transport the new bridges into place. This technology has been used successfully in Europe and the USA.

  • The new bridges are being constructed in a staging area next the Queensway. During a 15-hour full closure of the highway, starting at 8:00pm on Saturday August 11, 2007, the bridges will be replaced.

  • Each bridge is 28 metres long and 4 lanes wide (18 metres). The weight of each bridge is approximately 600 tonnes.

  • Using conventional construction methods a rehabilitation of this size would take two years to complete with lane reductions.

This contract is the first of three contracts to be completed on the Queensway. Contract two includes the rapid replacement of the Clyde Avenue Bridge and contract three will include the rapid replacement of the bridges at Carling Avenue Westbound, Kirkwood Avenue and Carling Avenue Eastbound.

Detour Route During Rapid Replacement

The Queensway will be closed between Carling Avenue and Bronson Avenue from 8:00pm on Saturday August 11, 2007 to 12:00pm on August 12, 2007.

Detour Routes will be taken as follows:
  • Westbound Detour:
    • Exit the Queensway at Bronson Avenue
    • Follow Bronson Avenue South to Carling Avenue
    • Take Carling Avenue West to Kirkwood Avenue
    • Take 417 Westbound On-Ramp at Kirkwood Avenue

  • Eastbound Detour:
    • Exit the Queensway at the Carling Avenue / Kirkwood Avenue Exit
    • Follow Carling Avenue Eastbound to Bronson Avenue
    • Take Bronson Avenue North to Chamberlain / Isabella
    • Take 417 Eastbound On-Ramp at Metcalfe
