As of January 1, 2007, new hours of service came into effect for all drivers of commercial motor vehicles. This section provides an overview of the basic rules. All the details of the hours of service requirements are contained in the Highway Traffic Act in Ontario Regulation 555/06.

The Hours of Service regulations apply to drivers of the following types of vehicles:

• Commercial motor vehicles having gross weight or registered gross weight over 4,500 kilograms;
• Buses, school buses and school purposes buses.
