Ontario announces project for replacement of a bridge and structural repairs on Highway 17

PEMBROKE - A project for the replacement of a bridge on Highway 17 at Grants Creek and two structural repairs was announced today by Transportation Minister David Turnbull and Norm Sterling, MPP for Lanark-Carleton.

"In an increasingly global marketplace, good highways truly are roads to prosperity," said Turnbull. "The Ontario government continues to invest in safe and efficient highways to support jobs and growth across Ontario."

The $2.2 -million contract was awarded to Teranorth Construction & Engineering Limited of St. Andrews West. The project includes construction of a new bridge at Grants Creek on Highway 17, 2.2 kilometres west of Stonecliffe; repairs to the Chalk River Bridge 6.2 kilometres east of the Town of Chalk River and the Canadian Pacific Railway overhead at Dieux Rivieres.

"This project will enhance driver safety and improve the operational efficiency of Highway 17," said Sterling. "It will also create jobs and support the growth of the business, commercial and tourist sectors in this beautiful part of Ontario."

"As part of our ongoing commitment to the rehabilitation of Highway 17 and upgrading of Highway 417, we recently announced a $75-million, four-year project to four-lane the highway corridor between Ottawa and Arnprior," added Turnbull.

Work is scheduled to start in late-March with completion in fall 2000.

Last year, the government invested a total of $936 million to improve and expand the province's highways.
