TORONTO - Ontario Transportation Minister David Turnbull today announced that the second phase of the reconstruction and widening of the interchange ramps at Highways 401/404 will proceed ahead of schedule.
"I am pleased we could accelerate the completion of this critical work by one year," said Turnbull. "Highway 401 is a significant economic corridor serving the whole GTA. Upgrading the 401/404 ramps will enhance safety and substantially reduce traffic backups for 270,000 Toronto area motorists who travel past the interchange each day."
The $7.6-million contract for the project was awarded to Dufferin Construction Company, of Oakville for the realignment and reconstruction of two existing ramps in the southwest quadrant of the interchange, and for construction of a new bridge over one of the newly reconstructed ramps. Work also includes construction of a noise barrier and new high mast lighting within the interchange area.
Last summer, the first $10.4-million phase of this project was awarded for the construction of two new structures to accommodate future ramps from Highway 401 eastbound to Highway 404 northbound. Work included repairs to a 2.7-kilometre section of Highway 404.
Together, the two projects will create the equivalent of 473 person years of employment for Ontario workers.
"In an increasingly global economy, good highways truly are roads to prosperity," said Turnbull. "The Ontario government continues to invest in safe and efficient highways to support jobs and growth across Ontario."
Work on the latest contract started this week. Completion of both projects is expected in the fall of 2001.
This is one of many initiatives the government is undertaking to build for the future. Last year alone, the government invested $936 million to improve and expand the province's highways.
