EXETER - The award of a $5.9-million project to upgrade 23.3 kilometres of Highway 4 was announced today by Transportation Minister David Turnbull, Bert Johnson, MPP for Perth-Middlesex and the Honourable Helen Johns, MPP for Huron-Bruce.
"In an increasingly global marketplace, good highways truly are roads to prosperity," said Turnbull. "The government continues to invest in safe and efficient highways to support jobs and growth across Ontario."
The contract was awarded toTowland (London) Co. Limited of Petersburg. Work is for 23.3 kilometres of resurfacing on Highway 4 from just south of Highway 7 northerly to the south limits of the Town of Exeter, excluding the Village of Lucan. Work also includes the extension of a truck-climbing lane and repairs to the Ausable River Bridge.
"Highway 4 plays a key role in the movement of people and goods in Perth-Middlesex," said Johnson. "Improving this busy route will enhance its safety and reliability for many years."
"Our government places a high priority on having an effective transportation network in this part of Ontario," added Johns. "Upgrading this key north-south highway will provide a safer ride for local residents, commercial traffic and visitors."
Completion of the project is scheduled for late August 2000.
The Ontario SuperBuild Corporation is a $20 billion, five year initiative created by this government to build for the future by improving capital planning, priority setting and investment. The government's goal is to make the entire capital investment process more strategic, more responsive and more accountable. SuperBuild will facilitate the largest infrastructure building program in Ontario's history, so that the province's infrastructure is ready to meet the future needs of Ontario's people.
