NEWMARKET - The award of a $3.9-million project to upgrade an 11.8-kilometre section of Highway 48 was announced today by Transportation Minister David Turnbull and Julia Munro, MPP for York North.
"In an increasingly global economy, good highways truly are roads to prosperity," said Turnbull. "The Ontario government continues to invest in safe and efficient highways to support jobs growth across Ontario."
The contract was awarded to K. J. Beamish Construction Company Limited of King City. The project is for the resurfacing of Highway 48 from north of Aurora Road to north Mount Albert Road. Work also includes construction on a 2.7-kilometre southbound truck-climbing lane from north of Davis Drive to south of Mount Albert Road.
"Upgrading this section of Highway 48 reflects the government's commitment to first-class highway system," said Munro. "Efficient road transportation supports the residential, business and tourism sectors in York Region."
Work is scheduled for completion in mid-September 2000.
This investment is part of the government's five-year, $20-billion SuperBuild initiative designed to build for the future by improving capital planning, priority setting and investment. The government's goal is to make the entire capital investment process more strategic, more responsive and more accountable. SuperBuild will facilitate the largest infrastructure building program in Ontario's history, so that the province's infrastructure is ready to meet the future needs of Ontario's people.
