PORT HOPE - The award of a $10.8-million project to widen a section of Highway 401 between Wesleyville Road and Port Hope was announced today by Transportation Minister David Turnbull and Doug Galt, MPP for Northumberland.
The contract was awarded to Warren Paving Limited of Belleville. The project is for widening of 5.5 kilometers of Highway 401 from four lanes to six lanes - from 0.8 kilometres west of Wesleyville Road easterly to Country Road 2 (former Highway 2) at Port Hope. Work also includes installation of a tall wall median barrier and repairs to the highway structure at Wesleyville Road. This project is part of a multi-year program to upgrade Highway 401.
"The government is committed to improving the efficiency, reliability and safety of Ontario's highways," said Galt. "Widening on this stretch of Highway 401 will also support the expansion of business and tourism in Northumberland."
Completion of this project is scheduled for the summer of 2001
This investment is part of the government's five-year, $20-billion SuperBuild initiative designed to build for the future by improving capital planning, priority setting and investment. The government's goal is to make the entire capital investment process more strategic, more responsive and more accountable. SuperBuild will facilitate the largest infrastructure building program in Ontario's history, so that the province's infrastructure is ready to meet the future needs to Ontario's people.
