Government announces project to resurface stretch of Highway 21

SARNIA - The award of a $2.5-million project to resurface 11.25 kilometres of Highway 21 was announced today by Transportation Minister David Turnbull and Marcel Beaubien, MPP for Lambton-Kent-Middlesex.

"In an increasingly global economy, good highways truly are roads to prosperity," said Turnbull. "The Ontario government continues to invest in safe and efficient highways to support jobs and growth across Ontario."

The contract was awarded to Lavis Contracting Company Limited of Clinton. The project is for resurfacing on Highway 21 from just south of Highway 402 northerly. Work also includes intersection improvements and replacement of the Hickory Creek Bridge.

"Improving this key stretch of highway is a wise investment of tax dollars," said Beaubien. "The work reflects the government's commitment to driver safety and supports the economies of the communities along the Highway 21 corridor."

Work is scheduled to start in early July, with completion in late November 2000.

This investment is part of the government's five-year, $20-billion SuperBuild initiative designed to build for the future by improving capital planning, priority setting and investment. The government's goal is to make the entire capital investment process more strategic, more responsive and more accountable. SuperBuild will facilitate the largest infrastructure building program in Ontario's history, so that the province's infrastructure is ready to meet the future needs of Ontario's people.
