Harris government announces major reconstruction project on Highway 15

KINGSTON - The award of a $9-million project to reconstruct 17.5 kilometres of Highway 15 was announced today by Transportation Minister David Turnbull and the Honourable Bob Runciman, MPP for Leeds-Grenville.

"In an increasingly global economy, good highways truly are roads to prosperity," said Turnbull. "The Ontario government continues to invest in safe and efficient highways to support jobs and growth across Ontario."

The contract was awarded to J. & P. Levesque Bros. Haulage Limited of Bancroft. The project includes reconstruction on Highway 15 from 2.8 kilometres north of County Road 42 northerly to Lombardy (excluding the Hamlet of Portland), construction of three passing lanes, as well as several intersection and safety improvements.

"Highway 15 is a key link between Highway 401 and Highway 7 in the Leeds-Grenville area," said Runciman. "Upgrading this stretch of highway will provide local businesses, residents, cottagers and visitors with higher levels of transportation efficiency and road safety."

Work is scheduled for completion in December 2001.

This investment is part of the government's five-year, $20-billion SuperBuild initiative designed to build for the future by improving capital planning, priority setting and investment. The government's goal is to make the entire capital investment process more strategic, more responsive and more accountable. SuperBuild will facilitate the largest infrastructure building program in Ontario's history, so that the province's infrastructure is ready to meet the future needs of Ontario's people.
