LONDON - The award of a $4.7-million project to resurface 7.8 kilometres of Highway 4 was announced today by Transportation Minister David Turnbull, Bert Johnson, MPP for Perth- Middlesex and the Honourable Dianne Cunningham, MPP for London North Centre.
"In an increasingly global economy, good highways truly are roads to prosperity," said Turnbull. "The Ontario government continues to invest in safe and efficient highways to support jobs and growth across Ontario."
The contract was awarded to Towland (London) 1970 Limited of Petersburg. The project includes resurfacing on Highway 4 (Richmond Street) from just south of the City of London north limits to just north of Middlesex Road 16 (Ilderton Road); repairs to the Medway Creek Bridge; improvements at the Highway 4 / Medway Road intersection, as well as improvements and installation of traffic signals at both the Ilderton Road and Sunningdale Road intersections.
"Upgrading this key stretch of Highway 4 shows foresight and is money well spent," said Johnson. "This work reflects the government's commitment to keep goods and people moving smoothly on highways in this part of southwestern Ontario."
"I am pleased to see the Highway 4 / Richmond Street improvements going forward this summer," said Cunningham. "This project will create jobs and support London's economy. It will also enhance driving and safety conditions for area residents, commuters and commercial drivers."
Work is scheduled to start in mid-July, with completion in mid-October 2000.
This investment is part of the government's five-year, $20-billion SuperBuild initiative designed to build for the future by improving capital planning, priority setting and investment. The government's goal is to make the entire capital investment process more strategic, more responsive and more accountable. SuperBuild will facilitate the largest infrastructure building program in Ontario's history, so that the province's infrastructure is ready to meet the future needs of Ontario's people.
