Government announces project to upgrade a stretch of Highway 7/12

UXBRIDGE - The award of an $838,955 contract to upgrade a 6-kilometre section of Highway 7/12 was announced today by Transportation Minister David Turnbull and John O'Toole, MPP for Durham.

"In an increasingly global economy, good highways truly are roads to prosperity," said Turnbull. "The Ontario government continues to invest in safe and efficient highways to support jobs and growth across Ontario."

The contract was awarded to Miller Paving Limited of Markham. The project is for resurfacing on Highway 7/12 from Durham Regional Road 47 (former Highway 47) northerly to Durham Regional Road 6. Work also includes intersection improvements at Jack Street in the Village of Greenbank and the 12th and 13th Lines.

"Commercial traffic, commuters and residents using this key stretch of Highway 7/12 will benefit from improved road safety and transportation efficiency," said O'Toole. "Once again, this demonstrates the government's commitment to first-class highways in Ontario."

Now underway, work is scheduled for completion by September 2000.

This investment is part of the government's five-year, $20-billion SuperBuild initiative designed to build for the future by improving capital planning, priority setting and investment. The government's goal is to make the entire capital investment process more strategic, more responsive and more accountable. SuperBuild will facilitate the largest infrastructure building program in Ontario's history, so that the province's infrastructure is ready to meet the future needs of Ontario's people.
