COBOURG - The award of a $14.5-million project for installation of concrete median barrier and resurfacing on Highway 401 was announced today by Transportation Minister David Turnbull and Doug Galt, MPP for Northumberland.
"In an increasingly global economy, good highways truly are roads to prosperity," said Turnbull. "The Ontario government continues to invest in safe and efficient highways to support jobs and growth across Ontario."
The contract was awarded to Armbro Construction Limited of Brampton. The project is for installation of tall wall concrete barrier and resurfacing on 9.8 kilometres of Highway 401 from 2.6 kilometres east of Nagle Road (County Road 45) at Cobourg easterly to 2.3 kilometres east of Aird Street (County Road 23). Work includes structural repairs at Drivers Rest Road and the Eagleson Road underpasses. Rumble strips will also be installed on a 37.9 kilometre section of the highway shoulder from 0.8 kilometres east of County Road 28 at Port Hope easterly to 0.8 kilometres west of Little Lake Road east of the community of Colborne.
"Keeping people and goods moving safety and smoothly on Highway 401 will support the growth of Northumberland businesses," said Galt. "Easy accessibility to our area is the key to creating jobs and attracting investment."
Work is now under way, with completion in the summer of 2001.
This investment is part of the government's five-year, $20-billion SuperBuild initiative designed to build for the future by improving capital planning, priority setting and investment. The government's goal is to make the entire capital investment process more strategic, more responsive and more accountable. SuperBuild will facilitate the largest infrastructure building program in Ontario's history, so that the province's infrastructure is ready to meet the future needs of Ontario's people.
