Ontario government announces project to resurface key section of Highway 9

KINCARDINE - A $4.5-million project for resurfacing on 13.3 kilometres of Highway 9 was announced today by Transportation Minister David Turnbull, Bill Murdoch, MPP for Bruce-Grey, and the Honourable Helen Johns, MPP for Huron-Bruce.

"This project is an investment for the future, benefiting Huron, Bruce and Grey County residents and businesses," said Murdoch. "It contributes to the efficient movement of both goods and people in the area and helps fuel the local economy."

The contract was awarded to Cox Construction Limited of Guelph. The project includes resurfacing on Highway 9 from just east of County Road 20 to the junction of Yonge Street (former Highway 4). As part of the work, the Greenock Creek bridge will undergo repairs and the Highway 9/Yonge Street intersection in Walkerton will be upgraded.

"I appreciate this government's commitment to a higher level of safety by upgrading this key stretch of highway," added Johns. "I'm sure everyone who travels on Highway 9 on a regular basis will be pleased with the results of the work."

Work is under way, with completion scheduled for mid-November 2000.

"In an increasingly global economy, good highways are roads to prosperity," said Turnbull. "The Ontario government continues to invest in safe and efficient highways to support jobs and growth across Ontario."

This investment is part of the government's five-year, $20-billion SuperBuild initiative designed to build for the future by improving capital planning, priority setting and investment. The government's goal is to make the entire capital investment process more strategic, more responsive and more accountable. SuperBuild will facilitate the largest infrastructure building program in Ontario's history, so that the province's infrastructure is ready to meet the future needs of Ontario's people.
