Government announces project to resurface 15.7 kilometres of Highway 138

CORNWALL - The award of a $3.8-million project to resurface 15.7 kilometres of Highway 138 was announced today by Transportation Minister David Turnbull.

"In an increasingly global economy, good highways truly are roads to prosperity," said Turnbull. "The Ontario government continues to invest in safe and efficient highways to support jobs and growth across Ontario."

The contract was awarded to Dibblee Construction Limited of Kingston. The project is for the resurfacing of Highway 138 between Cornwall Centre Road and County Road 43 (former Highway 43). Work also includes improvements to the Cornwall Centre Road intersection and reconstruction of Highway 138 through the Town of St. Andrews.

"Our government is committed to improving the efficiency, reliability and safety of key routes like Highway 138," said Turnbull. "Upgrading this stretch of roadway will also support the agriculture, business and tourism sectors in the Cornwall area."

Work is under way, with completion scheduled for late spring of 2001.

This investment is part of the government's five-year, $20-billion SuperBuild initiative. The program is designed to build for the future by improving capital planning, priority setting and investment. The government's goal is to make the entire capital investment process more strategic, more responsive and more accountable. SuperBuild will facilitate the largest infrastructure building program in Ontario's history, so that the province's infrastructure is ready to meet the future needs of Ontarians.
