Ontario government upgrades Highway 7 at Georgetown

GEORGETOWN - A $3.4-million project for reconstruction and intersection improvements on Highway 7 was announced today by Transportation Minister David Turnbull and Ted Chudleigh, MPP for Halton.

"In an increasingly global economy, good highways truly are roads to prosperity," said Turnbull. "The Ontario government continues to invest in safe and efficient highways to support jobs and growth across Ontario."

The contract was awarded to Graham Brothers Construction Limited of Brampton. The project is for improvements and widening at the Highway 7/Trafalgar Road North intersection including traffic signals and partial illumination. Reconstruction on 1.3 kilometres of Highway 7 from east of Trafalgar Road South to Ontario Street in Georgetown will also be undertaken as part of the contract.

"Highway 7 plays a key role in the movement of people and goods in this area," said Chudleigh. "These highway upgrades will benefit commuters, local residents, and commercial traffic with a smoother ride and higher level of safety."

Work is under way, with completion scheduled for mid-November 2000.

This investment is part of the government's five-year, $20-billion SuperBuild initiative. The program is designed to build for the future by improving capital planning, priority setting and investment. The government's goal is to make the entire capital investment process more strategic, more responsive and more accountable. SuperBuild will facilitate the largest infrastructure building program in Ontario's history, so that the province's infrastructure is ready to meet the future needs of Ontarians.
