Government announces project to resurface sections of Highways 5 and 8

HAMILTON - The award of a $5-million project for resurfacing and intersection improvements on Highways 5 and 8 was announced today by Transportation Minister David Turnbull and Brad Clark, MPP for Stoney Creek.

"In an increasingly global economy, good highways truly are roads to prosperity," said Turnbull. "The Ontario government continues to invest in safe and efficient highways to support jobs and growth across Ontario."

The contract was awarded to Capital Paving Incorporated of Puslinch. The project is for resurfacing on Highway 5 from just west of Highway 6 (Clappison's Corners) westerly to Highway 8 (Peter's Corners), a distance of 12.5 kilometres. Work also includes resurfacing on 4.8 kilometres of Highway 8 from Safari Road westerly to Branchton Road. Additional safety-related work includes various intersection improvements, lighting upgrades and installation of new traffic signals at the intersection of Highway 5 and Brock Road.

"Resurfacing will extend the operational life on these two sections of Highways 5 and 8 for many years," said Clark. "Work will also ensure a safe and smooth ride for the residents, commuters and commercial drivers who travel these routes every day."

Work is scheduled to start in early September, with completion in early November 2000.

This investment is part of the government's five-year, $20-billion SuperBuild initiative. The program is designed to build for the future by improving capital planning, priority setting and investment. The government's goal is to make the entire capital investment process more strategic, more responsive and more accountable. SuperBuild will facilitate the largest infrastructure building program in Ontario's history, so that the province's infrastructure is ready to meet the future needs of Ontarians.
