Ontario government to upgrade busy stretch of Highway 7

BRAMPTON - A project to upgrade 2.7 kilometres of Highway 7, including enhancing safety features, was announced today by Transportation Minister David Turnbull, Brampton Centre MPP Joe Spina, and Brampton West-Mississauga MPP Tony Clement.

"This project in the Brampton area is part of our government's SuperBuild commitment to invest a record $1 billion this year to expand and upgrade the provincial highway network," said Turnbull. "The Ontario government continues to invest in safe and efficient highways to support jobs and growth across the province."

The $3.2-million contract for this project was awarded to Fermar Paving Limited of Rexdale. Work includes 2.7 kilometres of resurfacing on Highway 7 between Highway 10 and Highway 410. Other improvements include lighting and traffic signal upgrades at the Highway 7/Langston Road intersection; construction of a new right-turn lane from Highway 7 westbound to Sunforest Drive; and new traffic signals at the Highway 7/Heart Lake Road off-ramp.

"Improving this key section of Highway 7 is a wise investment of highway dollars," said Spina. "This work reflects the government's commitment to ensure the safety and reliability of provincial highways serving commuters, businesses and industries in Brampton."

"This stretch of Highway 7 plays an important role in the movement of people and goods through Brampton," said Clement. "Upgrading the Highway 7 infrastructure will benefit the thousands of motorists who travel on this section of roadway every day."

Work is scheduled to start in late-November, with completion in the summer of 2001.

This investment is part of the government's five-year, $20-billion SuperBuild initiative. The program is designed to build for the future by improving capital planning, priority setting and investment. The government's goal is to make the entire capital investment process more strategic, more responsive and more accountable. SuperBuild will facilitate the largest infrastructure building program in Ontario's history, so that the province's infrastructure is ready to meet the future needs of Ontarians.
