MINDEN - A significant upgrade of the intersection at Highway 35 and 118 will improve traffic flow, enhance road safety and encourage economic expansion, Transportation Minister Brad Clark announced today.
"As we continue to improve Ontario's transportation corridors, we also promote the province's economic growth," Clark said. "This project is another example of how our government is investing in the future with safer, better highways."
Work at the intersection of Highway 35 and 118 at Carnarvon will include construction of new left- and right-turn lanes on all intersection approaches, resurfacing, installation of permanent traffic signals and new lighting. The $1.1-million contract for the improvements has been awarded to Royel Paving Limited of King City.
The investment is part of the government's five-year, $20-billion SuperBuild initiative designed to facilitate the largest infrastructure building program in Ontario's history.
"First-class highways are the key to a strong business and tourist economy in Haliburton," said Chris Hodgson, MPP for Haliburton-Victoria-Brock. "I'm certain area residents, cottagers and vacationers will be pleased with the increased level of safety when work is completed this summer."
Work is scheduled to start in early June, with completion in late July 2001.
By the end of this fiscal year, the Harris government will have invested more than $6 billion in highway capital programs.
