OWEN SOUND - To improve the movement of people and goods through Owen Sound, the Ontario government will build a new bridge over the North Spey River, Transportation Minister Brad Clark announced today.
"Our government's record investment in highway infrastructure is fueling economic growth throughout Ontario," said Clark. "When completed, this project will improve traffic flow, enhance road safety and encourage economic expansion."
The $569,000-contract was awarded to Owen King Limited of Walkerton. The project is for construction of a new concrete structure over the North Spey River to replace the existing bridge. Located 5 kilometres south of Owen Sound on Highways 6/10, the bridge will have increased capacity for storm-water run-off.
The investment is part of the government's five-year, $20-billion SuperBuild initiative designed to facilitate the largest infrastructure building program in Ontario's history.
"Keeping our highway bridges in top condition is an investment for the future," said Bill Murdoch, MPP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound. "Construction of the new bridge will create jobs, and when completed later this year, will contribute to the safe movement of people and goods on this busy route."
Work is under way, with completion scheduled for mid-September 2001.
By the end of this year, the Ontario government will have invested more than $6 billion in highway capital programs, since 1995.
