GUELPH — A project to rehabilitate the Brock Road and Highway 401 underpass at the Highway 6 east junction was announced today by Transportation Minister Norm Sterling and Guelph-Wellington MPP Brenda Elliott.
"When completed, this project will enhance road safety in the local area," Sterling said. "Our government's record investment in highway infrastructure is fueling economic growth throughout Ontario."
The contract was awarded to Underground Services (1983) Ltd. of Bolton. Valued at $1,145,000, the project will include the rehabilitation of the existing bridge and replacement of the existing steel railings with concrete barrier walls. In addition, Highway 6 and the commuter parking lot within the interchange area will be resurfaced.
"Keeping our highway bridges in top condition is an investment for the future," Elliott said. "This project will improve safety for drivers and prolong the operational life of the roadways and structures here in Guelph-Wellington."
Due to the nature of the work, Highway 6 / Brock Road will be reduced to one lane in both directions while construction is under way. Ramps and lanes on Highway 401 will be closed for short time periods during off-peak hours to facilitate bridge work. The commuter parking lot will be closed for resurfacing. Notice of all work will be posted prior to closure.
Work is scheduled to start this month, with completion in Fall 2002.
