HAMILTON — A $1.8 million project to build a new two-lane bridge at Glancaster Road over Highway 6 New was announced today by Transportation Minister Norm Sterling and MPP for Stoney Creek Brad Clark.
"Our government's record investment in highway infrastructure is fueling economic growth throughout Ontario," Clark said. "This project will make it safer and easier to get around Glanbrook. It will also help strengthen the local economy."
The contract was awarded to Dufferin Construction Company of Oakville. Work is scheduled to start this month, with completion scheduled for fall 2002.
"This bridge is critical to expanding transportation infrastructure in the Hamilton area, and adds to the recent good news announcement of the expansion of the John C. Munro Airport," Clark said. "Highway 6 New will provide safe and reliable access to the Hamilton International Airport and to Highway 6. The project is part of $35 million the province is spending for Highway 6 New."
Because of the nature of construction, Glancaster Road will be closed to through traffic. A six-kilometre detour will be in effect to facilitate traffic flow for local residents.
This investment is part of the government's five-year, $20-billion SuperBuild initiative designed to facilitate the largest infrastructure-building program in Ontario's history. Since 1995, the Ontario government will have invested about $6.5 billion in highway capital projects.
