MADOC — In a move that will boost the local economy, the Ernie Eves government is investing $8 million for improvements to Highway 7 through the former town of Madoc and the municipality of Tweed to benefit area businesses and residents, Transportation Minister Norm Sterling announced today.
"This project will improve traffic flow and safety in these communities," Sterling said. "This multi-million dollar investment in infrastructure will sustain and strengthen our growing economy and quality of life."
The contract was awarded to Miller Paving Ltd. of Markham. The project involves grading, drainage and pavement improvements to Highway 7 for 20 kilometres from west of Highway 62 to just east of Highway 37. Work also involves repairing three bridges, upgrading 10 side road intersections and the addition of one eastbound and one westbound passing lane.
"This government is committed to keeping people and goods moving safely and efficiently in Ontario," Sterling said.
Construction is scheduled to begin this summer and will be completed by the fall of 2003.
During the course of the work, temporary traffic signals will be installed at the bridges to control traffic. At all other locations, short-term lane closures will be required but a lane in both directions will be restored by the end of each workday.
This investment is part of the government's five-year, $20-billion SuperBuild initiative designed to facilitate the largest infrastructure-building program in Ontario's history. Since 1995, the Ontario government has invested more than $6.5 billion in highway capital projects.
