Busy highways and slow moving traffic, with streetcars and buses inching along the road...
Congestion is frustrating as longer commute times mean less time with family and friends. Through car emissions, congestion pollutes the air we breathe, and adds to the greenhouse gases responsible for global climate change. Good, strong transportation systems are important to our economy, but they need to be planned so that we reduce congestion and the impact on our environment.
The Province of Ontario created Greater Toronto Transportation Authority (GTTA) to tackle congestion, and create a user-friendly and integrated transit system in the Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton.
GTTA brings together the province and municipalities to build a sustainable transportation network that is better for our environment and improves our quality of life.
One of GTTA’s first priorities is to develop a transportation plan to help people travel more conveniently throughout the region. GTTA will also consider High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane projects in developing its regional transportation plan – to ensure that highways are operating as efficiently as possible
The GTTA will coordinate the purchase of transit vehicles to help participating transit agencies in Ontario reduce costs. This joint purchasing initiative improves municipal purchasing powers through economies of scale so they can replace aging vehicles sooner. Newer, more fuel-efficient buses mean more reliable service for transit riders and less air pollution.
Future responsibilities of GTTA will involve managing GO Transit and the Greater Toronto Area fare card system.
GTTA is taking steps to ensure that public transit is a realistic and attractive option for people and that our roads support the effective and efficient movement of people and goods.
GTTA is a provincial agency of the Ministry of Transportation and is led by an 11-member board of directors.
The chair and vice-chair were recommended by the province. The remaining nine members were recommended by the municipal councils of Durham, Halton, Peel, and York Regions, and the Cities of Toronto and Hamilton and appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council:
Michael Fenn is chief executive officer for GTTA.
GTTA will set up advisory committees representing key stakeholders and members of the public, including students, seniors, persons with disabilities, labour organizations and industry. The committees will play an important role in helping to develop a transportation plan.
