Ontario has among the safest roads in North America and we at MTO are committed to keeping them as safe as possible during winter weather conditions. Over the past four years the ministry has worked to improve the quality of snow clearing by adding equipment, strengthening the oversight of contractors and enhancing the way we plow truck climbing and passing lanes, and freeway ramps and shoulders.
On April 29, 2015, the ministry was directed by the Minister to develop and deliver an action plan within 60 days of the release of the Auditor General's report on Winter Highway Maintenance. This plan speaks directly to each of the eight recommendations made by the Auditor General and is the next step in improving winter driving conditions. It provides details on immediate actions that will be in place for the 2015/16 winter season and plans to improve the delivery of winter maintenance.
