MTO Hydrology Requirement Checklist

The checklists presented below provide a comprehensive list of documentation requirements to be included in a Hydrology Report submitted to MTO. It is the responsibility of the designer to determine the applicability of the documentation requirements listed to the design being considered. The selection should be based on the suitability of the tasks to each particular design proposal, and the scale and nature of the proposed project.

These checklists should be used to:

  • Identify the tasks that are relevant to the project.
  • Ensure that the relevant tasks have been considered, addressed and documented in the Hydrology Report; and
  • Provide comments that summarise findings, considerations and any other issues that need to be highlighted. Justification for excluding tasks should be provided in the checklist summary and in the body of the Hydrology Report if their exclusion is not for obvious reasons.

Checklist 4: Performing the Hydraulic Design

Criteria
Develop the design criteria for the proposed structure based on collected data, MTO standards, policies, guidelines and manuals and the CHBDC.
Acquire approvals for the proposed design criteria and modify design criteria if necessary.
Conduct the
Hydrologic
Analysis
Perform the hydrologic analysis, or verify existing analysis, to determine the design, check and regulatory flow rates using appropriate stream gauge station. Perform frequency analysis on stream flow data for 2, 10, 25, 50, 100-year return periods.
Perform the hydrologic analysis, or verify available analysis, to determine the design, check and regulatory flow rates applying alternative runoff simulation methods based on precipitation and watershed characteristic data for (2, 10, 25, 50, 100-year return periods). Document results of the analysis (as per the MTO online web page "Evaluation of Drainage Management Software").

Opening
Perform the hydraulic analysis to size the bridge or culvert opening(s).
Conduct water surface profile calculations, or verify existing analysis, to determine backwater and assess the impacts upstream and downstream. (An appropriate number of stream cross sections must be selected and defined for an accurate assessment of the water surface profile.)

Determine flow velocities for all storm events modelled.

of Footings
Perform the analysis to ensure the level of scour will not jeopardise the structural integrity of the bridge or culvert crossing.
Determine the appropriate depth of footing for the piers and abutments.
Design for
Ice and
Debris
Determine the requirement for conveying ice and debris flow and avoiding ice jams.
Design to
Convey
the
Regulatory
Storm
Identify the High Water Level, flood plane and flow path for the Regulatory flow event.
Identify if the post development extreme event will flow over the approach, over the structure or through the structure.
Determine the depth of flow:
  • at the approach and
  • over the structure.
Identify design features that will allow the structure to withstand additional forces due to overtopping, if applicable.

Checklist 5: Mitigating Impacts to the Drainage System
