Northwest GTA Corridor Identification Study

In December 2017, the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) and the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), with support from the Ministry of Energy, initiated a joint corridor identification study to assess long-term infrastructure uses for a corridor in the northwest Greater Toronto Area.

Based on the expected growth and infrastructure need in the area, the continued protection of a corridor is needed to ensure that the ongoing urbanization of the northwest GTA does not impede future infrastructure, such as utilities, transit or other transportation options, that will be needed to support this growth.

As part of the planning study, MTO and the IESO have identified a study area, which will be protected as the study moves forward over the next 9-12 months (see map below). This study is not conducted as an environmental assessment, and any infrastructure development in the area would require the completion of an applicable environmental assessment.

Work is also underway on a comprehensive Greater Golden Horseshoe Transportation Plan to develop an integrated, future-ready transportation system that connects people, places and goods over the next 50 years and beyond.
