2006 Accomplishments - Northern Highways Program

Part I: Accomplishments 2006

In 2006, the Ontario government invested $368 million to expand and repair highway infrastructure in Northern Ontario.

The highway construction program for 2006 included 36 new projects and 16 projects previously underway.

Some of the projects completed include:

Replacement of the Vermilion River Bridge on Highway 144, City of Greater Sudbury: This new bridge will enhance road safety and keep drivers moving efficiently through the Greater Sudbury area.

Highway 101 from Shawmere River Bridge westerly near Chapleau: Resurfaced almost 22 km of highway, providing motorists with a smoother driving surface.

Highway 11 from east of Kapuskasing to Moonbeam: Repairs to nearly 15 km of highway, including new passing lanes improves road safety and driving conditions in this area.

Highway 11/17 between Ouimet and Highway 582: Resurfaced almost nine km of highway, providing motorists with a smoother driving surface while new passing lanes and a truck-climbing lane enhance road safety and traffic flow.

CNR Bridge at Highway 11, east of Highway 502 near Fort Frances: Maintaining this bridge in good repair keeps Highway 11 drivers moving efficiently through this area.

A complete listing of the major highway construction projects completed in 2006 is provided in the appendix to this document.

A summary of the accomplishments related to the 2006 construction program is outlined below:

  • Repaired 19 bridges
  • Repaired 140 km of highways
  • Operational improvements included shoulder improvements, truck-climbing lanes, passing lanes and new guide rails
  • Over 9,000 jobs were created across Ontario.
