During the three-month period beginning October 26, the new law will be supported by a comprehensive public education and awareness campaign to inform the public about the new rules. If police feel a charge under the new law is warranted, a summons can be issued requiring the driver to appear in court and face a fine of up to $500.
It is important to note that even during the public education period, drivers who endanger others because of any distraction, including hand-held and hands-free devices, may be charged with careless driving or even dangerous driving (a criminal offence).
Police will start issuing tickets on February 1, 2010.
