Reduced Suspension Program

You are eligible to reduce your licence suspension from your Criminal Code conviction:                                                                         

  • If you satisfy the conditions listed below before [DATE], you could be reinstated as soon as [DATE] and your ignition interlock licence condition could be removed as soon as [DATE].
  • If you do not satisfy the conditions listed below before [DATE], you may still be eligible for a reduced suspension period as short as six months and an ignition interlock condition for a minimum of one year.

To enter the Reduced Suspension Program, you must satisfy the following conditions:

  1. Be reinstated from other licence suspensions (e.g. unpaid fines, medical, etc.);
  2. Pay any outstanding fees or administrative monetary penalties;
  3. Complete the assessment part of the Remedial Measures Program by contacting the,
    Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) at 1-888-814-5831 (in Toronto 416-595-
    6593); and,
  4. Arrange to install an ignition interlock device in your vehicle by contacting one of Ontario’s approved ignition interlock service providers (1 A LifeSafer of Canada, Inc. at 1-888-769-6080 or ALCOLOCK Canada Inc. at 1-866-658-6374).

NOTE:  Please contact CAMH and your Ignition Interlock Service Provider immediately to
ensure earliest reinstatement.

The enclosed information and registration package provide information on how to apply.

To exit the Reduced Suspension Program and have the ignition interlock condition removed from your licence:

  1. You must complete the full Remedial Measures Program.
  2. Near the end of your ignition interlock installation period you must provide an acceptable final ignition interlock report with no performance failures in the last three months, including alcohol breath test failures or failure to provide a breath sample when the vehicle is running. Performance failures will extend your ignition interlock installation period by a further three months.

If you commit any program violations such as driving a vehicle without the ignition interlock device, you will be re-suspended for the remainder of your original suspension period and not reinstated until you complete the full Remedial Measures Program. Upon reinstatement, you will have an ignition interlock condition on your licence for a minimum of 12 months. It will be illegal for you to drive a motor vehicle without an approved and installed ignition interlock device.

If you choose not to enter the Reduced Suspension Program, you must:

  • Serve the full suspension period;
  • Complete the Remedial Measures Program prior to reinstatement (it will take up to 11 months to complete the program);
  • Upon reinstatement, have an ignition interlock condition on your licence for a minimum of 12 months; and,
  • Apply for removal of the ignition interlock condition from your licence.
