Medical Review

Our goal

The Medical Review Section, Driver Improvement Office, is committed to improving road user safety and mobility in Ontario by efficiently and effectively delivering medical review programs based on policy and legislation.

On an annual basis the Medical Review Section processes over 190,000 medical reports and responds to approximately 185,000 telephone calls.

Our commitment to you

  • If you cannot find the information you need on our voice messaging system our Medical Analysts are available:
    • Monday to Friday during normal business hours
    • 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
    • Not available on holidays
  • The Medical Review Section will review your case and take appropriate action within 30 business days.
  • In cases where additional information is required, additional time may be needed.

How you can help us help you

In cases where additional medical information is required, the driver is given the opportunity to file additional medical information.

  • A letter is mailed to the driver outlining the information required
  • Specific timeframe is given for the driver to submit medical information to the ministry

Drivers who are unable to meet the timeframe for filing additional information:

  • May be given an extension by calling or writing to MTO for an extension.

If the additional information confirming the driver meets the medical standards is received by the due date:

  • The driving privilege will be considered for reinstatement
  • Driver will be advised of the outcome of the review by mail

If you are inquiring about the status of your letter and/or report and want to avoid waiting to speak to an analyst, please use the automated service by calling (416) 235-1773 or 1-800-268-1481 and press 1.

How to provide feedback or a complaint

We value your opinion and want to hear what you think about the quality of our service. Your compliments, complaints and suggestions will be managed in a timely and professional manner. We also seek feedback directly from clients through feedback on the Internet, comments via the telephone, TTY and client satisfaction surveys.

When you provide feedback, your privacy and confidentiality will be respected and protected. You don't have to tell us your name if you don't want to, but it will help us keep you informed about the progress of your complaint.

Your compliments let us know where we are performing well. Your complaints help us to improve the quality of our information.
