Patrol staff tracks pavement/weather forecasts Visual patrolling requirement reduced Patrol staff monitor larger boundary.
RWIS integrated system provides real-time information:
Pavement sensors: embedded in highway pavement and bridge decks measure road surface temperature monitor levels of precipitation (wet, ice, snow or frost) determine whether de-icing chemicals are present or needed
Atmospheric sensors: measure air temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, dew point, wind speed and direction
Pavement forecast: real-time sensor information provided to meteorological service which combines data with weather forecast provides tailored forecast of pavement conditions, 24 hours in advance
Video surveillance: visual monitoring of roadway, visibility and presence of precipitation
Mobile infrared thermometers measure pavement temperature identify areas of potential ice formation
Weather patterns are tracked as they move into an area.
As storm approaches, automated decision support mechanism allows for on-demand deployment of staff and equipment.
With detailed pavement information, proactive strategies can be implemented:
Advanced anti-icing to prevent icing and to minimize bond between road and snow/ice.
Prewetting materials to allow de-icing material to adhere better to the road, reducing to amount required and minimizing environmental effects.
Contractor maintenance operations monitored.
Global Positioning System identifies equipment location GPS data logger records material spreading rates, spreader operating speeds, snow plow speeds.
Road Surface Condition Monitoring Equipment measures friction of driving surface during winter conditions can be used to establish data on effects of material applications and rates of application.
