Highway 416 South

Century Road to Highway 401

• The province has completed the entire route from Highway 417 (Queensway) to Highway 401. The highway was officially opened on September 23, 1999, $14 million under budget and one year ahead of schedule.

• A total of 80 km of 4 lane highway and the new 416/401 Interchange are now open.

• The construction cost to widen the existing south section of Highway 16 to four lanes from Highway 401 to Century Road was estimated to be $127 million.

• The work involved approximately 57 km of twinning (southbound lanes), 8 interchanges, 29 structures and approximately 14 km of services roads.

• Highway widening was delivered in five major freeway contracts.

• The first freeway contract Century Road to Roger Stevens was awarded to Tarmac Canada for $7.3 M on June 10, 1996. This section has now been completed and is open to traffic.

• The second freeway contract from Roger Stevens to County Road 43 was awarded to Bot Construction Ltd for $23.2 M on August 19, 1996. This section has now been completed and is open to traffic.

• The third freeway contract from County Road 43 to County Road 20 was awarded to Armbro Construction Ltd for $17.6 M on July 10, 1997. This section was completed in late summer of 1998 and is now open to traffic.

• The fourth freeway contract from County Rd. 20 to County Road 21 was awarded to Bot Construction for $12.5 M on October 21, 1997. This section has now been completed and is open to traffic.

• The fifth freeway contract from County Rd. 21 to Highway 401 was awarded to Armbro for 21.5 M on April 8, 1998. This portion of highway was completed in the fall of 1999 and is now open to traffic.

• There will also be an additional eight smaller contracts including the rehabilitation of existing Highway 416, bridge rehabilitations and landscaping.

• The rehabilitation of the northbound lanes in the Kempville area from Vanburen St. South to County Rd 20 has been awarded to Dibblee Construction for $2.5 M on May 25, 1999. The work has been completed and is open to traffic.

• The first resurfacing contract of the NBL from Roger Stevens to County Road 43 was awarded to Beaver Construction for $1.6 M on May 22, 1996. This work is now complete.

• A second resurfacing contract was awarded to Tarcon/Beaver Construction for $727,000, on August 6, 1997. The work was completed in September 1997.

• More than 220,000 truck trips are estimated to haul the materials required to twin the 57 km. This translates into an average of 350 truck trips per construction day.

• The Rideau River bridge spans 289 m (950 ft.).

• Due to poor soil conditions at certain bridge locations, lightweight material (polystyrene and slag) will be used, as well as vertical wick drains to alleviate settlement problems at the bridge approach embankments.

• The width of the median varies from a grassed 22 m (72 ft) in the north to a maximum forested median of 68 m (223 ft) in the south end.
