TRIP is a road information service for easy access to road information for provincially maintained highways.
Road closures and restrictions, winter road conditions, construction, traffic flow, traffic cameras, car pool lots and high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes information is provided and updated regularly.
This site provides road information on provincially maintained highways in both text and interactive map formats, in English and French.
TRIP also has a telephone hotline 1-800-268-4686 or 416-235-4686 or TTY 1-866-471-8929 and 905-704-2426.
Click on the topics listed in the left hand legend to access the text information or click on the map to activate the interactive map. Use the Google map's + or - to zoom in or out, or click and drag 'hand' to move across the province. Select information layers by clicking on the boxes in the map's legend. The topics selected will appear as symbols or colours on the map. The symbols and colours are explained in the legend below the map.
Hovering or clicking on a symbol on the map will give a pop-up with detailed information.
Road conditions, construction, closures and restrictions are reported by MTO road patrols, contractors and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to regional communications centres. This information is entered into databases on regular schedules and more frequently if conditions change. These databases upload to the internet and telephone systems on 15 minute intervals. Traffic cameras located on selected high volume highways, provide images of road and traffic conditions in 3-5 minute intervals.
TRIP uses Google maps - see the help section for more information about Google mapping.
Traffic cameras are powered by Compass - see the Compass page for more information.
The TRIP telephone hotline uses voice recognition and text-to-speech technologies to give road information in audio format. Since information is pulled from a variety of databases, you will hear different voice recordings on the hotline.
Touch tone telephone commands are available for people with difficulty using voice commands. Counsellors are also available during business hours to assist callers.
As more road information, such as rest areas along provincial highways, becomes available it will be added to TRIP.
You tell us what information you would like to have by emailing us at mtoinfo@ontario.ca
TRIP's telephone hotline will participate in a future Ontario 511 service for road information. This service will be part of a continent-wide 511 service.
