Green Commercial Vehicle Program

The Green Commercial Vehicle Program (GCVP) is an incentive-based program for the commercial transportation sector, where incentives are provided upon proof of purchase as outlined below:

  • For the purchase of alternative fuel vehicles such as electric, natural gas or diesel-natural gas dual fuel vehicles, incentive amounts range from 15-50% of the incremental purchase cost of an eligible vehicle as compared to an equivalent conventional fuel vehicle.
  • For fuel saving devices, the incentive amount is 30-50% of the purchase and installation cost, of the aerodynamic device, anti-idling device or electric refrigeration unit. See the list of approved devices.

The GCVP will also include a stream of funding for Commercial Transportation Innovation Pilots. Further details on this portion of the program will be available in late 2018.

GCVP Program Key Dates

All eligible purchases made on or after September 1, 2017 will be eligible to apply for incentives.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What if the device I’m interested in isn’t listed on the eligible devices list?
  2. How do I know if the vehicle I’m interested in is eligible?
  3. Is there a limit to how much funding I’m able to apply for?
  4. What happens if the manufacturer is not able to deliver my vehicle within the six month period?
  5. How is the incentive amount calculated?

1. What if the device I’m interested in isn’t listed on the eligible devices list?

Please contact the ministry with questions about specific technologies not currently included on the eligible devices list. The ministry considers certification by the EPA – SmartWay Technology Program or similar programs as important criteria when evaluating which devices are eligible for funding.

2. How do I know if the vehicle I’m interested in is eligible?

For general vehicle eligibility criteria, please consult the Program Guide. As part of the application review process, the ministry will confirm vehicle eligibility and the maximum incentive value.

3. Is there a limit to how much funding I’m able to apply for?

There is no limit to the number of incentives that may be applied for. Payment of incentives will be subject to the availability of funds.

4. What happens if the manufacturer is not able to deliver my vehicle within the six month period?

If the purchase is not completed within six months of the application being approved, a new application will need to be submitted. Under exceptional circumstances, applicants can contact the ministry to request an extension, which the ministry may choose to grant at its sole discretion.

5. How is the incentive amount calculated?

For vehicles, the incremental cost will be determined based on the pre-tax value of the alternative fuel vehicle and its conventional equivalent. The specified percentage and caps will then apply.

For devices, the cost will be based on the pre-tax value of the device and installation costs. The specified percentage and caps will then apply.

Incentive amounts are deducted from the final purchase price, after all taxes are applied.
