About the Longer Wheelbase Tractors Permit Program

Carriers can now apply for a permit to operate tandem tractors with wheelbases longer than 6.2 metres up to 6.8 metres on Safe, Productive, and Infrastructure-Friendly semi-trailer combinations 2 through 7, as designated under Ontario Regulation 413/05, Vehicle Weights and Dimensions (VWD) for Safe, Productive, and Infrastructure-Friendly (SPIF) Vehicles. The Ministry of Transportation launched the permit program in May 2018.

The benefits of a longer tractor wheelbase include:

  • Space to accommodate emission-reducing technologies
  • Longer and more comfortable sleeper berths for drivers, which help fight driver fatigue, and
  • Standardized tractors fleets that allow carriers to use tractors with any trailer in their fleet, making it easier for operators to comply with regulations.

Please note that increasing the tractor wheelbase requires a trade-off reduction to the semi-trailer wheelbase to maintain off-tracking while cornering. Required modifications to the tractor wheelbase are listed in the semi-trailer wheelbase trade-off reduction table provided as part of the permit appendix.
