Electric Vehicle Conversions

1.  What is an electric vehicle conversion decal?

  • An electric conversion decal is a sticker that will be affixed to a vehicle notifying the public and emergency first responders that the vehicle has been changed from the original manufacturer’s design.

2.  Why is the electric vehicle conversion decal required?

  • The electric vehicle conversion decal is required to notify emergency first responders of the possibility of electrical hazards during a collision or emergency situation.

3. Where are the electric vehicle conversion decals to be affixed?

  • One decal shall be affixed to the inside of the lower, driver-side corner of the windshield and the second one to the lower passenger-side corner of the rear window.  If the vehicle is not equipped with a rear window, the second label shall be affixed to the inside of the lower, rearmost corner of the rearmost passenger-side window.

4. Why is a Safety Standards Certificate (SSC) required?

  • The conversion process results in a change to the vehicle’s engine compartment components, therefore the SSC is required to ensure the conversion has been completed safely.

5.  Why is the Electric Vehicle Conversion Declaration Form required?

  • The Declaration Form is a supplementary document that affirms the applicant has changed their vehicle from an internal combustion engine to battery power.

6.  How does an applicant obtain a Declaration Form?

  • Declaration forms will be available at the three ServiceOntario Centres assigned to perform this transaction and online (PDF).

7. Do these registration rules apply to vehicles originally manufactured as electric vehicles?

  • No, this policy does not affect vehicles that have been originally manufactured as electric vehicles.  It only applies to vehicles that have been converted from internal combustion engine to full electric power.
